Hi

for Mains you have to select the two optional subjects as you know this . that too you can select this optional from the pre defined list by UPSC here is the list of optional subject that you need to select.

>>Agriculture
>>Management
>>Animal Husbandry & Vetinary Science
>>Mathematics
>>Anthropology
>>Mechanical Engineering
>>Botany
>>Medical Science
>>Chemistry
>>Philosophy
>>Civil Engineering
>>Physics
>>Commerce & Accountancy
>>Political Science & International Relations
>>Economics
>>Psychology
>>Electrical Engineering
>>Public Administration
>>Geography
>>Sociology
>>Geology
>>Statistics

The Rules in selecting optional subjects For Mains. are as follows :-

->you have to select only two optional subjects .

->you should not select two engineering subjects as your optionals i.e., For example you should not select Civil engineering and Mechanical engineering as your two optionals.

->you cannot select two literature subjects

and few more rules are there for selecting optional subjects...

but your combination is allowed according to these rules so you can go ahead with your combination i.e.,. Mechanical Engineering and Physics..

all the best for your preparation friend

Regards

Mechanical Engineering is a branch and not a subject..

When you fill in your two optional subjects for the Mains exam..you need to fill the subjects not the branch..

At that time..you can fill one core subject of your mechanical stream and the other subject as Physics..that won't be much of a problem..

Eligibility Criteria :-

According to the UPSC guidelines..a candidate must satisfy the following criterion to appear for the Civil Service Exam :-

1) You need to be a graduate or a final year graduation student in any stream from a recognized college..

2) You should be in the age limit of 21-30 years for general category,21-33 years for OBC and 21-35 years for SC/ST

The maximum number of attempts allowed for the general category is 4,for OBC it is 7 and for SC/ST there is no limit..

Exam Pattern :-

There are 2 rounds for clearing this exam

1) Prelims :- This round..also known as Civil Service Aptitude Test(CSAT) has 2 objective papers which will test your general knowledge, current affairs and aptitude..

2) Mains :- If you clear the Prelims, then you shall qualify for the Mains where you will face nine papers..where your knowledge of your graduation subjects shall be tested..

NOTE :- For the Mains..you need to select your two optional subjects where you can put in your options as one Mechanical core subject and the other subject as Physics..

If you clear both the rounds..you shall be called for the interview and the final selection..

all the best..

With Warm Regards
"Nitz"

Dear pal,
Half the battle of clearing the paper is won if you select the write optional paper.
You need to choose the paper wisely.I think you have chosen then papers correctly as the papers suits you more than others papers.
Mechanical paper is a right choice you can choose maths instead of physics if you are get at maths .Physics is also a good subjects.I recommend maths as you would have learned maths during 5 semesters. All the best

Any two subjects (each having 2 papers) to be selected from the prescribed optional subjects.

Each paper is of 3 hours duration.

The following combinations are not allowed:
