Hello friend,
A graduate in any discipline is eligilbe to appear for the IAS exam conducted by UPSC.
Now, cracking the exam depends upon your preparation and hard work. The examination is divided into two stages.
Preliminary exam
Main exam

But from the upcoming year, the preliminary exam will be replaced by civil service aptitude test and the pattern of main exam is supposed to remain the same.
An aptitude test is designed to check the candidates intelligence, reasoning sence, arguementative capacity, aesthatic sense, analytical ability and command over a language.
The main exam comprises of compulsary and optional subjects.
The compulsary subjects for the Main exam are one Indian language, English, Essay and General studies.
Following are the optional subject from which one can select any subject depending upon the area of expertise.
Agriculture Mathematics, Animal Husbandry & Vetinary Science, Mechanical Engineering Botany, Medical Science, Chemistry, Philosophy, Civil Engineering, Physics, Commerce,Political Science ,Economics ,Psychology Electrical Engineering Public Administration, Geography, Sociology, Geology, Statistics, Indian,History, Zoology,Law.

Apart from working on the aptitude test, you must try to work hard on the compulsary subjects and try to select optional subject depending upon your strength and interest in particular subject. There are many books available in the book stores for IAS preparation. You may also enroll yourself to a coaching centre for better results.
For further information, you must visit the official website of UPSC.

Thumbs up Re: How to Prepare for IAS? Syllabus and Recommended Books?

Each and every personnel will have their own style of preparation...

so you should follow your own style..

I can only just suggest you some tips how to prepare..

->first strongly determine that you're going to get a rank in the coming exam

->do research on syllabus pattern and paper pattern

->sit for preparation before 6 months (If you're average student like me)

or else 3 months is sufficient.

->make your preparation plan in to three parts

->part 1 total syllabus

->part 2 revision of total syllabus

->part 3 practice tests of three parts..

->finally attempt your exams with confidence

thats all if your are perfect in planning and implementation you will get a good rank according to your desire.

syllabus for this is uploaded in a txt file below click on it for more details.

best regards

Academic Eligibility for IAS Exams

A degree of any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be a Deemed University under the UGC Act, 1956, or an equivalent qualification.
Candidates who have appeared or intend to appear for the qualifying examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear for the Preliminary Examination. All such candidates who qualify to appear for the Civil Services Main Examination must produce proof of having passed the said examination along with their application for the Main Examination.
The UPSC may in exceptional cases treat a candidate without the foregoing requisite qualification as an eligible candidate if he / she has passed an examination conducted by other institutions, the standard of which justifies his / her admission in the opinion of the Commission.
Candidates with professional and technical qualifications recognised by the Government as equivalent to professional and technical degrees.
Candidates who have passed the final year of MBBS or any Medical Examination but are yet to complete the internship can also appear for the Main Examination. However they must submit along with their Main Examination application, a certificate from the concerned authority of the University / Institution that they have passed the final professional medical examination. At the Interview stage they must then produce a certificate from a competent authority that they have completed (including internship) all the requirements for the award of the Medical Degree.

Candidates belonging to either categories of b., c., d. or e., must produce an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India. Those who belong to either of b., c., or d., categories are not eligible for appointment to the Indian Foreign Service.

Dear friend,

IAS stands for Indian Administrative Service.

It is regarded as one of the most respectable and prestigious job in India.

Every year lakhs of candidates appear for this exam and among them only few get selected for IAS job.

About 1000 candidates get selected for IAS, IFS, IPS, IRS, etc. posts by UPSC.

Since, IAS is very tough exam, so you need to work very hard for this exam.

You will have to crack three stages to qualify IAS Exam i.e.

>> Preliminary Exam (CSAT Exam)

>> Mains Exam

>> Personal Interview

Some of the good books for the IAS Pre Exam preparation are:

Governance in India for UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination (Paper - I) 1st Edition (Paperback) by M. Laxmikanth
Price: Rs. 236

General Studies for Civil Services Preliminary Examinations (Paper - 1) (Paperback) by Manohar Pandey
Price: Rs. 866

Geography of India 4th Edition (Paperback) by Majid Husain and 1 more variant
Price: Rs. 303
