Cardiothoracic Surgery is the branch of medicine in which professionals engage in surgical treatment of diseases affecting organs inside the thorax. This branch of medicine generally deals with the treatment of conditions of lungs and heart (i.e.) lung and heart diseases. Cardiac surgery, which deals with great vessels and heart and thoracic surgery, which deals with lungs and other thoracic organs are separate surgical specialties other than the countries of New Zealand, Australia, the UK and the USA.

They are grouped together in such a way that surgeons training in the cardiothoracic specialty can get broader knowledge in both fields before they develop their special interest in certain part of specialty.
