Bathinda District is located in the Indian state of Punjab and the district is spread over an area of 3344 square kilometers. The district of Bathinda is bounded by the state of Haryana on the south, Mansa and Barnala District on the east, Mukatsar district to the west and Faridkot District to the north. The district acts as the leading producer of Cotton in the state of Punjab. The district came into existence in the year 1948 with the formation of Patiala and East Punjab States Union. The district is the ninth largest in the state of Punjab with respect to population and the female ratio of the district is 865 females per 1000 males.

Education in Bathinda District:

The district of Bathinda is known as an educationally backward district in the state and according to the census conducted in the year 2001, the literacy rate of the district is 61.51% thereby the district stands in the 13th place with respect to district wise ranking. In addition, the male-female literacy rate is 68.31% male and 53.76% in females. However, at present the district receives due attention in setting up of educational institutions and the Punjabi University has established Guru Kashi Regional Center in Bathinda for offering PG Courses, law course and B. Ed course. A government engineering college and a government polytechnic college is functioning from the district for offering technical education. In addition, there are some degree colleges in the district for offering humanities, commerce and science courses. Engineering College:

Giani Zail Singh College of Engineering & Technology is the first institution in the state of Punjab established with the full-funding of the state government of Punjab in the year 1989 and the foundation stone for the establishment of this university was laid on the 23rd of October 1989 by the Honorable Government of the state of Punjab Sh. S.S. Ray. Initially, the college began its journey as Government Engineering College and was converted as an autonomous institution working under the control of Government of Punjab. The institute is offering engineering education with affiliation from the Punjab Technical University located in Jalandhar and the list of courses offered by the institution is given below:

Government Rajindra College, Bathinda came into existence as a primary school in the year 1940 and the college is affiliated to the Punjabi University located in Patiala. The college offers education in the faculties of arts, science and commerce at UG level as general courses, while Bachelor of Science honors is offered in economics. In addition the college also offers Master of Arts in Political science and other self-financing courses like BBA, BCA and PGDCA.
