This beautiful high range district in the state of Kerala is geographically known for its dense forests and mountainous hills. About 66% of the power needs of the state of Kerala are met by the hydroelectric power projects of the state of Idukki. The district of Idukki accounts to 3.7% of the population of Kerala and 12.9 percentage of the area of Kerala. The district was formed in the year 1972 on the 26th of January and initially the district had Kottayam as its headquarters, which was then shifted to Painavu in the year 1976.
