With the initiative of the earlier Prime Minister of India Mr. P.V. Narasimha Roa and the untiring hard work of Dr. Shrikant Jichkar and sturdy encouragement from Late Mr. Sudhakarrao Naik, the first Sanskrit University in the state of Maharashtra named as Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya was established in the year 1997 on the 18th of September. The university was established in a place called Ramtek, in the district of Nagpur mainly because the place has some connections with the life of the great poet Kalidas, in whose honor the university was named. This is a unique Sanskrit University in the country because the other Sanskrit universities cover subjects pertaining to traditional Sanskrit language, while this university has associated modern subjects with this conventional language. As-mentioned earlier, Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University is special from other Sanskrit universities in the country and the courses offered by the university lays stress on modernity, while preserving the traditionality in the holy language of Sanskrit. The university lays special stress on the technology and science in the Indian history as protected in the Sanskrit texts. In addition to the above-mentioned affiliated institutions, several other institutions from different states of India has applied for affiliation with this university. Apart from this, the university has also signed memorandum of understanding with several other institutions in different parts of India. A rich library in the university’s campus is being computerized and the library has a good collection of manuscripts.
