Manipur University was founded in the year 1980 on the 5th of June under the university Act 1980. It was established as an affiliating-cum-teaching university and its jurisdiction is spread over the whole state of Manipur. With effect from the 13th of October 2005, the university got the status of central university with Act No.54 of 2005. The university is located in the capital city of Manipur called as Imphal. Its campus is spread over an area of 287 acres of land in the historic palace of the kingdom of Manipur called as Canchipur. To ensure integrated development and proper planning of affiliated colleges, a college development council was set up in the university. At present more than 70 colleges are functioning under Manipal University and apart from these colleges, several centers like center for Gandhian studies, Myanmar Studies, Manipur Studies, computer centre, EMMRC and museum are also functioning under the college. A Welfare corner is also functioning under the university and several facilities like hostel, guesthouse, health centre, scholarships/medicals, employment information and guidance bureau, transportation facilities, audiovisual languages and phonetics laboratory are offered to the students through this welfare corner. Apart from the previously mentioned facilities, several other facilities like canteen, special cell for OBS/ST/SC, postal and banking facilities are also included in the campus of Manipur University. The university offers job-oriented vocational courses to the students to ensure good placement of the students in the future. Six schools are also functioning under the jurisdiction of this university.
