The Veer Kunwar Singh University got its name in honor of the famous freedom fighter and it was formed in the year 1992 on the 22nd of October. The headquarters of the university is situated at Ara and it was formed under the University Act of the State of Bihar. The jurisdiction of the university is spread over four western districts of Bihar namely Rohtas, Kaimur, Buxar and Bhojpur, which are educationally backward.

The university is one of the universities in India that is enlisted in the list of recognized universities by University Grants Commission Act under sec. 2 (f). One of the affiliated college and 17 constituent colleges coming under this university is receiving grants from the UGC. The Veer Kunwar Singh University is conducting learning and teaching in areas like Sociology, Economics, History, Commerce, Mathematics, Zoology, Botany, Chemistry and Physics. In addition to these, the university is also running different exchange programs affiliated to several institutions and colleges located around and in the state of Bihar.

For improving the quality of Governance at the basic level, the university is eager to introduce training programmes for the selected representatives of Public functionaries and panchayati raj in collaboration with the Government of Bihar. Nearly, 20 post-graduation departments are functioning under the university and through these departments different courses are offered by the university. The undergraduate departments of the university are classified into four main groups being arts, commerce, science and education.
