West Bengal University of Health Sciences was established on 2003 on the 1st of January under the West Bengal University of Health Sciences Act 2002. The purpose of establishment of the university is to teach, affiliate and to ensure systematic and proper instruction in speech education and therapy, physiotherapy, education on laboratory technology, dental education, pharmacy education, nursing education, unani system of medicine, ayurvedic system of medicine, homoeopathic system of medicine and modern system of medicine.

The university offers post-graduation, under-graduation and post-doctoral courses inclusive of Ph. D as well. Since the number of new colleges affiliated to the university is increasing every year the university is increasing the number of seats in the courses like B. Pharm, M. Sc Nursing, B. West Bengal University of Health Sciences aims to promote and develop an academic climate helpful to pursuit excellence and scholarship, either individually or joining together with other centers of excellence of higher education.

The university has recently introduced new courses like Master of speech language pathology and audiology, MPT and post-doctoral certificate course in Neuro- anaesthesia and has several other courses in pipeline as well. The university was formed for better management of medical and health related courses previously taught in universities like University of North Bengal, University of Burdwan and University of Calcutta. Most of the medical courses taught in these universities were brought under West Bengal University of Health Sciences after 2003.
