Central University of Tamil Nadu shortly called as CUTN came into existence through an Act of Parliament dated March 2009. The university strives for dissemination and advancement of knowledge in applied, basic, social sciences and humanities. The main aim of the university is promotion of innovation in teaching-learning process and inter-disciplinary research and studies and the university lays special attention on the development of socio-economic conditions of the people and their cultural, intellectual and educational development. The university periodically revises and updates its educational programmes.

The university was inaugurated on the 30th of September 2009 and the foundation stone for the establishment of this university was laid by Shri. Kapil Sibal, Honorable Union Minister of HRD in the presence of the then Chief Minister of the state Dr. M. Karunananidhi. The university is presently functioning from a temporary campus at Tiruvarur spread over an area of 55000 square feet on rent-free basis and the campus was offered by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The Central Public Works Department has quickly made electrical and civil works in such a way that the present campus in which the university is functioning can be utilized for educational requirements. Central University of Tamil Nadu being a recently established university, is presently offering only a few courses and they are:

Integrated Master of Science Courses:

Five-year integrated Master of Science in

o Economics

o Chemistry

o Physics

o Mathematics

PG Courses:

Master of Science in

o Financial Economics

o General Economics

Master of Arts in English Studies

Central University of Tamil Nadu is offering education through three different schools being School of Mathematics & Computer Sciences, School of Basic and Applied Sciences and School of Social Sciences & Humanities.

Admissions: Admission of students to the different courses offered by the Central University of Tamil Nadu is done based on the merit secured by the candidates in Central Universities Common Entrance Test shortly called as CUCET. This examination enables the students to gain admission to any one of the seven central universities in states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand and Kashmir. These seven central universities in different states in India offer more than 80 courses at the PG, integrated and UG level and research level as well. The best thing about this common examination is that it enables the students to apply for multiple programs (three at a time) and multiple universities as well (three at a time) in one go.
