Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences shortly called as ILBS was established by the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi. The institute is an autonomous institution registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 at the city of New Delhi. It has also earned deemed university status from the University Grants Commission and the mission of the institute is to become a dedicated centre of excellence for management and diagnosis of biliiary and liver related diseases and for offering advanced research and training in the field of hepato-biliary sciences. The institute lays attention on care of patients, health care of social relevance and excellent quality training of international standards.

The university is acting as a teaching hospital, thereby offering not only medical service, but educational services as well thereby creating the best professionals for liver and biliary sciences. Foundation stone for the construction of the institute was laid in the year 2003 and the first phase of ILBS was built by the Public Works Department and the first phase was completed on 2009. The hospital was formally inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Delhi on the 14th of January 2010. The second phase was constructed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and it was completed recently.

Different eligibility requirements need to be fulfilled by the candidates for getting into each of the course offered by the Institute. Admission of students to the DM/M. Ch and PDCC courses offered by the university is done based on merit secured by medical professionals on entrance test, which will be objective type with 70 marks and 30 marks weightage will be offered to assessment and final interview for candidates getting through the objective-type written test. For the DM/M. Ch/PDCC courses, candidates with MD/MS/DNB/MBBS with minimum number of attempts will be given preference. In addition, preference will be given to candidates with high marks in the final year of MBBS examination.
