The National Dairy Research Institute is the nation’s premier Dairy Research Institute and it has developed considerable expertise over the past decades in different areas like human resource development, management, processing and dairy production. The services offered by the institute and the information generated from it have contributed towards the development of dairy industry as a whole and for the well-being of the millions of milk consumers and producers of milk products and milk.

History of National Dairy Research Institute:

The National Dairy Research Institute, which is operating from the place called Karnal in the Indian state of Haryana originally began its journey as Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in the year 1923 at the city of Bangalore. Later in the year 1936, it was developed and renamed as Imperial Dairy Institute and was known as the National Dairy Research Institute after the independence of the nation in the year 1947. Subsequently, in the year 1955, the headquarters of the institute was shifted to Karnal and the facilities at the city of Bangalore were retained for functioning as a Regional Station for serving the southern states of the nation. In the year 1964, the Eastern Regional Station of the institute was introduced at the city of Kalyani in West Bengal and both the regional centres at Bangalore and Kalyani continue to offer regional specific research and development support for development of dairying in these areas. Again in the year 1970, the institute was brought under the Indian Council for Agricultural Research for offering greater operational autonomy in such a way that the institute can carry out its research management functions efficiently. Later in the year 1989, the institute was conferred with the status of Deemed University with a view to strengthen its educational activities for ensuring human resource development.
