The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences shortly called as NIMHANS is offering education from the city of Bangalore and the institute holds the pride of being the premier institution for Neuroscience courses in the nation. The institute actually began its journey in the year 1925 as a Mental Hospital and it got its present name in the year 1974 on the 27th of December. The institute earned recognition from the India Government as ‘Medical Institute of National Importance’ along with some of the best medical institutions in the nation. Later in the year 1994, the institute earned the status of Deemed University under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act 1956.

Right from its inception, the institute has been introducing several new courses at regular intervals and the advanced programs in the areas of basic sciences, behavioral sciences and biological sciences are being offered by the university in relation to the brain-mind-behavior axis.  The institute has so far acquired many notable achievements and 22 departments are functioning under the university for offering education and the names of these departments are given below:

Admission capacity of the institute for internal fellowship Ph. D in Clinical Psychology, Neurophysiology is 6 seats and 2 seats respectively and 1 seat each for Ph. D in Psychiatric Social Work and Speech Pathology & Audiology. While for external fellowship courses, candidates sponsored by the Indian government or any other state government institution or candidates sponsored by universities are admitted. For external fellowships, candidates from government agencies like NET, ICMR, CSIR and UGC and candidates, who are permanent employees of NIMHANS are eligible to apply.  Admissions to Ph. D courses offered by NIMHANS are done  on the basis of merit secured by candidates in the Ph. D entrance test conducted by this deemed university.
