Periyar Maniammai University began its journey as Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women in the year 1988. The institution was established by the Periyar Maniammai Educational and Charitable Society. When the institution was established as a college, the college held the pride of being the first engineering college for women in the world.

The institution was established as a women’s engineering college with the objective of offering higher education in the fields of science and technology and to encourage women to actively participate in the global, national and social development. The institution began to offer engineering courses with approval from the All India Council for Technical Education and with affiliation from the Bharathidasan University located in Trichy. Later, it came under the jurisdiction of Anna University from the academic year 2001-2002. Later, in the year 2007, the institution earned the status of Deemed University and it is presently offering education through different schools functioning under its control.

The schools functioning under Periyar Maniammai University are School of Architecture, Engineering & Technology, School of Humanities, Science & Management and School of Computer Science & Engineering. There are eight departments each under the School of Architecture, Engineering & Technology and School of Humanities, Science and Management and four departments under the School of Computer Science & Engineering. The Periyar Maniammai College of Engineering earned the status of Deemed University due to its academic excellence in extension activities, research and teaching. The deemed university status was conferred by the Government of India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956 on the 17th of August 2007. The university has earned several other recognitions for its best services and it has also implemented the innovative examination pattern in line with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System.
