To satisfy the growing requirement of marine engineers in India, the institute was established in the year 1947 with the name of Directorate of Marine Engineering Training. The institute was given its present name in the year 1994 and it has its headquarters at Kolkata and branch at Mumbai. The marine engineering course offered by the institution is affiliated to Jadavpur University and approved by All India Council for Technical Education.

Course Details:

Marine Engineering and Research Institute shortly called as MERI is offering Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering and the duration of the course if four years, which is divided into eight semesters.

Qualification Requirements:

To be able to get admission to MERI, candidates must be unmarried citizens of India and even limited number of foreign students can be admitted with approval from Government of India’s Ministry of Shipping. The candidates must not be more than 20 years of age during the month of October in the year in which they are seeking admission. The upper age limit is relaxable by five years for SC/ST candidates.

Admission Procedure & Seat Reservation:

The institute admits students to the Marine Engineering course on the basis of their performance in the Joint Entrance Examination conducted by Indian Institute of Technology namely IIT-JEE. Out of the total number of seats available for admission, the institute reserves 27% for candidates belonging to OBC category, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe and 15% for Schedule Caste candidates. Candidates succeeding in the entrance examination will be selected only after counseling.

Fee Structure for Indian Students:

The approximate fee for the marine engineering course offered by the institute is Rs. 1,00,000 per year to be paid as Rs. 50,000 in the beginning of each semester and Rs. 90,000 for candidates falling under SC/ST category, who will have to pay Rs. 45, 000 in the beginning of each semester. The institute offers 50% remission in the tuition for women candidates.
