NID is recognized as an institution in the design field and as for designing in Indian industry. It was set up by the government of India for design education, training, service, research. It is also recognized by department of science of technology as scientific and industrial research institute. It ha many faculties like Faculty of Industrial Design, Faculty of Communication Design, Faculty of Textile & Apparel Design, Faculty of Exhibition Design.

Special Features:

Provides design services to industry level clients. Research can be done in a number of industrial situations, transportation, health aids, design for children, conservation of materials, crafts and design for rural needs. Documentation of the cultural resources is emphasized.

Design Business Incubator Park:

NID offers the selected students for academic and technological facilities to turn their ideas into reality. Students need to pay a royalty to NID if they are successful in their ideas.

The duration of Foundation program is of 2 semesters. Major stream can be from faculties-industrial design, communication design, textile or apparel design or exhibition design.

Admission Procedure

Students who have passed XII examination or appearing or with even higher qualification can take admission.
For the form and the prospectus payment of Rs. 500 by DD is to be drawn in favour of National Institute of Design. One day workshop and interview for those selected in the test.  Selection is done through the NID’s selection criteria.

Financial Aid - Loan from HDFC for higher education. Students can pay the loans after completing their studies at NID with an upper limit of 90% of the total expenditure. Assistance from institute for getting scholarships from State Government and Government of India.

Course Briefs (School Leavers Programme)
Introduction to the basic skills and conceptual ability that is necessary for a designer. This includes freehand drawing, geometry, model making, introduction to materials, colour, graphic composition and design process.
Learning through actual practice, experience and exploration of media and phenomena are more emphasized. Based on the preference and aptitude the students are given their streams of choice.

Product design - Aims at those who can handle design development of products. Students need to demonstrate their learning and application of theory as they work in real conditions. In theory various subjects are taught like engineering, materials and processes, technical sciences etc. Product design in plastics, control-display interface design techno-aesthetic detailing all come under major projects.

Furniture design- Designing of furniture for domestic and commercial use can be extended to design storage devices and structures. It includes wood and metal joinery and prototype making.

Textile design - This involves printing on garments and apparels, furnishing and interiors.
Various techniques of surface design and decoration, fabric structure and practical experience of printing and dyeing methods in craft and industrial sectors.

Ceramic design - Students can work in ceramic industries whether small, medium or large industries as designers. There is a diverse range of products for the industries as designers work with materials.

Visual communication - communication is necessary as students need to communicate to a variety of clients in different sectors.

For specialization students can take their major in graphic design, video programming and animation. They can also take layout and topography, letter design, colour photography and illustration.

Product Design – Graduates in engineering, Architecture and Diploma holders may apply.

Furniture Design – Graduates in Architecture, Engineering, interior Design and diploma holders can apply.

Ceramic Design – Graduates in Fine arts, Architecture, Engineering, Ceramic technology and Diploma holders may apply.

New Media Graduates in any discipline with basic competencies in software related to multimedia/new media/convergent technologies are eligible.

Textile Design – Graduates in Fine arts, Applied arts, Home science and Diploma holders may apply

Apparel & Accessory Design – Graduates in Fine Arts/Applied Arts and 10+2 with experience can apply.

Animation Film Design – Graduates and diploma holders in Fine arts. Graduates in creative expression or communication arts may also apply.

Admission Procedure
Selected candidates from admission tests are called for an interview. Students must have a high proficiency in drawing as they need to come up with innovative ideas and implementing them.
