The force is actually a paramilitary security agency which performs all its functions under the aegis of Ministry of Home Affairs. The primary role of the force is to assist the state territories in police operations to maintain law and order. Thye force played a major role in the security arrangements at the time of Paramilitary elections of September 1999. The force actually came into existnce under the Central Reserve Police Force Atc, 1949. Initially, it was established as Crown Representative Police.
