BHU stands for Banaras Hindu University and this university came into existence in the year 1916 thereby acting as one of the oldest universities in India. BHU offers courses in different faculties like visual arts, social sciences, Engineering, science, performing arts, management studies, law, education, commerce and arts.

In addition to education under these faculties, the university also offers professional courses through the four professional institutions functioning under its control and they are:

Master of Technology course is offered by the Institute of Technology in different branches as given below:

Admission notification:

Normally, advertisement calling for applications from eligible candidates to apply for M. Tech course offered by the institute is published in the website of Institute of Technology and in the website of BHU at www.itbhu.ac.in and www.bhu.ac.in respectively.

Eligibility for admission to M. Tech course:

Eligibility qualification to be fulfilled by the candidates for applying to the M. Tech course offered by the IT BHU in different branches is as follows:

Civil, Electrical, Electronics, Mining, chemical, Mechanical Engineering: For admission to these branches, candidates must have completed their B. Tech/equivalent degree in respective branches.

Metallurgical Engineering: To apply to this course, candidates with B. Tech or equivalent degree in chemical technology, mechanical engineering, ceramic/chemical/mineral engineering, materials science engineering or metallurgical engineering are eligible to apply. Candidates with M. Sc chemistry or Physics with specialization in inorganic chemistry/physical chemistry/solid state physics with 60% of above are also eligible to apply if and only when they have completed B. Sc/B. Sc (honors) with mathematics as one of the subject at the UG level.

Industrial Management & System Engineering: Candidates with B. Tech or equivalent in any branch of engineering are eligible to apply to these two branches of M. Tech course.

Ceramic Engineering: For M. Tech course in ceramic engineering, candidates with B. Tech or its equivalent degree in silicate technology/materials science & technology/chemical engineering & technology/metallurgical/mechanical/electrical/electroics/civil/ceramic engineering are eligible to apply. Also, candidates with Master of Science in Physics with special papers in electronics/solid state or Master of Science in Chemistry with special papers in solid state chemistry/inorganic chemistry/physical chemistry with not less than 60% or above are eligible to apply provided they have passes B. Sc/B. Sc (hons.) exam with physics, chemistry and mathematics at the UG level.

Material Science & Technology: For admission to the Master of Technology course in Material Science & Technology course, candidates with B. Tech or equivalent degree in any branch are eligible to apply and candidates with M. Sc in chemistry/physics/material science with not less than 60% of marks are also eligible. However, it is essential that candidates with M. Sc qualification must have studied statistics/computer science/chemistry and mathematics and physics at the UG level.

For all of the above said branches, Candidates who are waiting for their results in the final year of their B. Tech/equivalent course are also eligible to apply for the M. Tech courses, however, these candidates will have to submit a certificate along with mark sheets from the concerned institution stating that they have taken up all examinations pertaining to the degree course and there is no pending examination except the final examination for them. Provisional admission will be offered to these candidates until they produce documentary evidence for clearing the qualifying examination, failing which their admission will remain cancelled.

Admission Procedure:

Admission of students to the M. Tech courses is done based on Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score. Application should be sent by the candidates in prescribed format as given in http://www.itbhu.ac.in/admissions/notifications/application_form_2011-12.pdf. Application can be submitted either through post or in person along with DD for Rs.500 for general and OBC candidate and Rs.250 for SC/ST candidates, drawn in favor of Institute of Technology, BHU payable at SBI, BHU, Varanasi. Application should be sent to the respective department heads or coordinator of school at the following address:

On the basis of GATE score, there will also be interview and/or counseling.
