North Estatern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) was established in the year 1987 under the Government of India. It was established as an autonomous institute under the Meghalaya Registration of Socities Act 1983. The institute was established by the then Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi. The institute is dedicated to the memory of Late Indira Gandhi, who was also the former Prime Minister. The institute has gained the status of Postgraduate Medical Institute. The institute has been the first medical institute in the North Eastern Region.
