The Xavier Institute of Management is located in Bhubaneswar. The Institute was established because of a social contract between Orissa Jesuit Society and Government of Orissa. The management of XIMB consists of representatives from Government of Orissa, Government of India, Jesuit Society and leading educationists and industrialists.

Candidates who apply for admission to XIMB have to appear for an admission test which acts as a screening test. The screening test for the institute is XAT. This test is conducted by XLRI, Jamshedpur. Applicants must register for XAT before applying for admission to XIMB. XLRI does not play any role in the selection process of XIMB

XIMB considers the sectional as well as the overall cut-off marks in the screening test to shortlist the candidates. The shortlisted candidates are called for a Group Discussion followed by a Personal Interview. Group Discussion and Personal Interview are held at Bhubaneswar, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Mumbai. The travelling expenses have to be borne by the candidates. The overall performance of the candidate in XAT and Group Discussion & Personal Interview along with the past academic record and work experience, will determine the admission of the candidate to the PGDM programme. The selected candidates are informed generally by the first week of April.
