Hello dear aspirant , as you want to pursue your further studies in foreign universities or the IITs in structural engineering:

For admissions in the M.S. course in the foreign universities you will have to appear for the Graduate Record Examination.
Anyone and everyone is eligible for taking the GRE Test - there are no restrictions based on age or qualifications.
The top Universities of USA which provide M.S. in structural engineering are:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Princeton University.

University of California.

University of California.

Cornell University.

University of Michigan.

Carnegie Mellon University.

University of Texas At Austin.

Georgia Institute of Technology.

University of Illinois.

For admissions in the IITs you will have to appear for the Graduate Aptitude test for Engineers.
Any student in the final year or passed out B.E. / B.Tech student can apply for the GATE.
There is no age restriction for application.

Regards,
Pkay.

Re: M.Tech from top US universities or IITs?

This list would be too long. You need to narrow it down by specialization or location. For example, if you want to go to California, then check out California Institute of Technology. If you want a university that specializes in aeronautics, you may want to check out the George Washington University which has a great program in association with NASA. Some publications have developed rankings for US universities. Check out this page http://www.macquil.com for a list of them.

Re: M.Tech from top US universities or IITs?

Hi

M.Tech stands for the Master's in Technology. Its basically a full time 2 years course which is the advanced form of B.Tech or B.E

Just like in India its called M.Tech, in the United States of America this course is referred to as M.S - Master's in Science. It consists of a more detailed study about the same.

Now If you are a bit confused to choose between the M.Tech in IIT's or M.S in US Universities, I would state a few points that would help you decide.

First of all you should be in a position to decide for this, ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE GOT A CALL FROM ANY OF THE IIT's for admission.

You must clear GATE exam very well before you can talk about studying M.Tech in any of the IIT's. Its one of the toughest exams in the country and so until you clear it, you do not even have the option of studying in IIT's.

Yeah but if you have, then I would suggest that IIT's are a better Universities if you look in terms of technical education and the quality of faculties they have.

US Universities are not bad, but they charge up for everything. When you pay lacs, you are obvious to get good quality. But the IIT's are a brand and yet they charge nominal.

If you are not worried about the charges and course fees, then you can always give yourself an exposure and take admission in top US Universities.

Some of the top Universities in United States are :

1. Harvard University

2. Princeton University

3. Yale University

4. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

5. Stanford University

6. California Institute of Technology

7. University of Pennsylvania

8. Columbia University

9. Duke University

and many more...

So you can always thing about them. But the top IIT's in India are Kharagpur, Kanpur, Mumbai, Delhi, Madras, Roorkie, Guwahati

Hope this helps

All the best.

Re: M.Tech from top US universities or IITs?

These universities in US are most preferred for the masters degrees. The best universities in US are:

Harvard University
Princeton University
Yale University
Columbia University
Stanford University
University of Pennsylvania
California Institute of Technology
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Dartmouth College
Duke University

But mind it that doing your masters in abroad will be very much costlier, and if you are just a person of a middle class family you may not be able to afford the fees.

IIT's in India are also the best colleges of India and can also compete those universities. You can also complete your masters in structural engineering from IIT's also.

.M.Tech in IIT or MS in US???
2009 May 30
tags: Admission, Advise, BTech, M.Techby Zahid
. I came across this question when I was in B.Tech third year, from then I usually asked for my opinion on this. This is really a good question and every engineering student who thinks of either a great job or good carrier asks at least once to himself.

After graduating from IIT when I look back to this question, I can immediately conclude that the question itself was wrong. The reason is that the IITs are India’s top Engineering schools with a strong Alumni base in all technology companies in world, are compared to any university in US.

The right question should be “M.Tech in IITs or MS in top 50 Engineering Schools of US?” or “M.Tech in India or MS in US?” These questions are correct and not comparing apple with oranges.

Let me answer the second question first. M.Tech in India or MS in US? The answer to this question according to my understanding is US is a good option. As even a university with rank around 300 will have a one or two good faculties members who studied at top universities during certain level of their educational qualifications. At least they carry that culture with them and can be helpful for the students to think differently and confidently. Job opportunities in US are more, as the competition is less than when compared to India.

If I have an admission letter from top NITs or IITs and some university in US with ranking around 200, I will go for M.Tech in India. As NITs and IITs have all top companies of the world in every domain for campus recruitment with a 200% placement figures. No university in the world has this kind of placement statistics. This will also open doors for me higher education in top 50 universities in US with a scholarship which otherwise is quite difficult.

Let me come to the first question. “M.Tech in IITs or MS in top 50 Engineering Schools of US?” The answer is quite simple and straight, MS in US top 50 universities (with a scholarship) is a better choice. To reach there either you should be a fresh IITian, Some top 20 institutes in India, or already have a job experience in on of the top multinational companies like Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo…etc.

Getting into either IITs or Top 50 universities (with a scholarship) need lots of hard work and luck. With hard work and consistent try to get admission into these heavens of education one at certain point of time can be there. But I rarely saw someone with luck alone reached there. For M.Tech in IITs you have to prepare for GATE, take time to study for it. Need gather best GATE martial, solve previous questions papers and try not to be less than 99 % (percentile). On the other hand to go to top universities in US, you need to prepare hard for GRE and make sure that you won’t get less than 1400, write a good statement of purpose and run around to arrange good recommendations. After everything wait for admission committee decision, once you get an admission letter run around the US embassy to get visa. This all process make you understand that easy things don’t pay you much in life, so take a stand and work hard and pray for good luck.

To summarize this I would prefer to go to any Top engineering school in the world that gives me a freedom to make decision about career without any compulsions. Only IITs, Top NITs and Top Schools in any other developed country can give this opportunity. By Career decision I mean the decision to switch between Industry and academia easily.

Importantly, wherever I wrote Top US universities I also wrote with scholarship that covers your living and fees there. Otherwise, it will be really difficult to manage everything and study. Also, only top students will get scholarships and that is really an honor to start with.

I wish you a great luck with whatever you choose for your future.

Re: M.Tech from top US universities or IITs?

hi friend,
here i am giving some suggestions for doing M.tech...
if you want to enrich your English knowledg and your practical knowledge means prefer abroad universities.
it take more cost.if the cost is no matter means prefer for US.
if cost is a matter means it is best you do M.tech in our IITs.
Because IITs provide same quality of education as in abroad.
so make your choice. All the best for your carrier.
bye.
