Re: Eligibility for admission in government engineering colleges of Tamilnadu hy, THE Tamil Nadu Government has reduced by five per cent the eligibility mark for admission to engineering colleges in the state from the coming academic year. The minimum marks a candidate should have scored in the higher secondary examinations for admission to engineering colleges has been reduced to 55 per cent from 60 per cent for the open category, 50 per cent from 55 per cent for BC and 45 per cent from 50 per cent for MBC. For candidates be-longing to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes a mere pass is enough. Announcing this in the Assembly on Tuesday Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy said the move would help the engineering colleges fill seats, especially those under the government quota. Replying to the discussion on the demand for grants for higher education department, Ponmudy pointed out that the government had abolished common entrance test for admission to engineering colleges from the 2007-08 academic year with a view to giving candidates from rural areasa level-playing field with their urban counterparts. Despite this, 14,721 seats remained unfilled last year. The number of engineering colleges has also gone up to 272 now from a mere 10 in 1980. This is expected to go up further for the 2008-09 academic year, as some more colleges, both government and self-financing, have been proposed to be set up. Taking into consideration the large number of students seeking to pursue engineering courses, and the high rate of unfilled seats, it had been decided to reduce the marks eligibility, he said.Ansari. In a bid to prevent the introduction of the Bill in the House, Samajvadi Party (SP) members tried to snatch away the Bill papers from Bhardwaj.Janata Dal (United) members supported the SP members. Sensing the trouble, Bhardwaj was unusually seated in the middle row of the Treasury benches and was surrounded by Congress members and women Ministers Ambika Soni and Kumari Selja. When attempts were made to snatch papers from Bhardwaj, Congress members Jayanti Natarajan and Alka Balram shielded Bharadwaj. Union Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chaudhary rushed in to push away SP member Abu Asim Azmi when he tried to reach Bhardwaj to snatch the Bill papers. |
