Dear,

First before starting the preparation for GATE exam I suggest you to refer the pevious year question papers to have glance over the exam then you can get the grip over the preparation for the exam.

I would suggest you to refer the following books which have been used by many gate exam

B. S. Reddy,
CPWD Civil Engineering from G.K. Publications
and
Civil Engineering (Objective) by S.K. Srivastava.

Apart from these, at least 1.5 months before the exam one must solve GATE previous years questions.

The preparation of gate exams can be started from when u start your engineering course.That would be the best option.The advantage is that you have set your goal. You know your aim, so you can actually go deep into each and every topic which is the best way to understand the subject. One of the best books available in the market for gate in civil engineering is Civil Engineering authored by B. S. Reddy. There are few other objective types books too, that you can refer, like Civil Engineering (Objective) by S.K. Srivastava.
