Re: Is GATE exam required for PhD admission in IIT?

In 2008, my GATE score was 84.55 percentile. And then I completed my M.tech in Computer engineering with 7.27 CGPA. Now I want to do PhD from IIT, so I want to ask you that, is my old GATE score useful to get PhD admission in IIT or I have to score again in GATE exam? Please guide me.

Re: Is GATE exam required for PhD admission in IIT?

The IIT Council that decided to increase the tuition fee for undergraduate students also decided that the peer review of each institute would be carried out every five years. The review committee would consist of five eminent academics from academia and industry. The committee members would be selected by the Board of Governors of respective Institutes from a panel of 10 names. For the new IITs, a similar exercise would be based on well-established review systems in world-class institutions. Besides a periodic review of the institution, each IIT will similarly undertake an in-house, department-wise review before any external peer review is carried out.

With a view to increasing the number of Ph.Ds from 3,000 at present to 10,000 by 2020, the Council of IITs also decided to relax the conditions for enrolment into Ph.D Programme in the IITs. The admission would be given without GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score to students with CGPA (cumulative grade point average) of more than 7.0 at the end of the 3rd year but GATE score would be required for scholarship.

However, students from Centrally Funded Technical Institutions with CGPA of less than 7.0 would be eligible for Ph.D programmes and fellowships without GATE scores.

The Council also approved the Trainee teacher Award National Institute of technology/IIT Joint Scheme with an aim to enhance the teaching quality and to address the faculty shortage. The scheme is open to all graduating candidates who are in the top 15 per cent in the Centrally Funded Technical Institutes. All other candidates who are in the top 15 per cent from other AICTE/UGC approved institutions and universities and having a valid GATE score would also be eligible.

HRD Minister Pallam Raju said they would be engaged as trainee teachers at NITs. While initially they would assist in teaching, they would simultaneously go through the part-time M.Tech and Ph.D programmes of the IITs to acquire higher academic qualification, which is a prerequisite for faculty at NITs.

Keywords: IITs, PhD candidates, tuition fee hike, IIT Council, Board of directors, cumulative grade point average

to do PhD in IIT but you need to write all India entrance exam,NET for which gate score card is necessary.so you must have to give the gate exams.

Re: Is GATE exam required for PhD admission in IIT?

The admission of Ph.d doesn't depend upon GATE score ,all the IITs conduct the Ph.d entrance exam itself .So you have to appear in those exams .
For that -
1.you have to score 65% through your M.tech or ME.
2.60% in graduation.

Maximum IITs follows this criteria.

If you can fulfill those two criteria then you are eligible for the entrance.

The exam is basically Math oriented .

So prepare yourself.

Thank you

Re: Is GATE exam required for PhD admission in IIT?

hi friend,

ph.d admission into iit doesn't depend upon the marks of gate .

so, get good marks in m.tech and the exam in which iit will conduct in the iit itself

all the best

Re: Is GATE exam required for PhD admission in IIT?

Dear friend,
To do PhD from any IIT or NIT you need to give their PhD entrance test examination, but not GATE examination. As for an example if you wish to do PhD in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Gandhinagar then you need to give the PhD entrance exam of IIT Gandhinagar for Mechanical stream, in these entrance tests there will be around 50 to 60 % Mathematics.

So GATE is not required to do PhD from any IIT or NIT!

Re: Is GATE exam required for PhD admission in IIT?

No dear there is no requirement of gate score in the Phd admission.
It is on the basis of your me/mtech percent.
some colleges conduct Phd for be/Btech where you have required the gate score, but in iit it is not so.

Re: Is GATE exam required for PhD admission in IIT?

No You do not need to crack GATE exam for doing Ph.D at IIT

Candidates who do not have M.Tech or PG degree should clear GATE scores with above 300.

Since you have done your PG you need not write GATE exam for getting admission

But your % in M.Tech should be min. of 60% in aggregate or CGPA 6.75 in a 10 point scale

Selection will be done on the basis of Written test & Interview

Re: Is GATE exam required for PhD admission in IIT?

dear friend,

no, my friend there is no need of GATE exam for doing PHD in IIT. you just have to complete your master degree first. then you can apply for Phd..

As you want to take admission in IIT then you have to do well in Mtech..

after that you have to appear in entrance exam of IIT for Phd..

if you qualify in that exam , then you can join in IIT for PHD.

all the best.

Re: Is GATE exam required for PhD admission in IIT?

dear friend,
Through GATE exam , a candidate only take admission in M.Tech not PhD.
As you want to do PhD then , you have to go to any college like IIT,NIT & apply for it separately.
There are no any written exam conducted for PhD, As per your marks in M.Tech, they will directly call you for interview.

good luck.
