The Basic Difference between the IAS & IPS is that the fullform of IAS os Indian Administrative Services and IPS is Indian Police Services . Now if you apper for IAS and if you pass then you get job Collector , Dept. Collector etc. Acoording to your position in exam you will be alloted in different states and cities .But if you apper for IPS you will be able to aquire job as Commissioner , ACP , Head of Forest Department etc. so prepare well for these exams.

Re: What is the basic difference between IAS and IPS exam?

Both IAS and IPS are streams that are a part of the joint exam conducted by UPSC. The selection procedure is similar and all applicants have to pass through the same screening procedure. High rank holders become an IAS while those having lower ranks have to join IPS.IAS personnel handle governmental affairs and are absorbed in the administrative setup, while IPS are personnel that take up the challenging responsibility of maintaining law and order in the society. While an IAS can hold posts like Cabinet Secretary, Under Secretary, Joint Secretary, Additional Secretary and Secretary, IPS officers clearly belong to the police force and hold posts like Superintendent of Police, Deputy Inspector General and Inspector General.

Hi

IAS - Indian Administrative Services

This is basically an Entrance Exam for the selection of various personnel's for various posts in Administrative Services.

The Basic Eligibility Criteria says the applicants must be a minimum graduate in ANY stream to apply for the same.
Also the age should be between 21-30 years for GEN, and 33 and 35 years respectively for the OBC and SC/ST..
The number of attempts are also limited to 4 for GEN, 7 for OBC and Unlimited for the SC/ST's.

But

IPS - Indian Police Services

This is basically an Entrance Exam for the selection of the various personnel's for the various posts in the Police Services.

The Basic Eligibility Criteria, age and attempts are similar to that of the IAS. These are the Civil Service Examinations which are conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) every year.

These are the main difference between the two.
For any more information, Please Click Here

You can choose by whichever stream you want to go for. Either the Administrative services or Police.

Hope this helps

All the best

Re: What is the basic difference between IAS and IPS exam?

Basic difference between IAS and IPS is that IAS personnel handles governmental affairs and are absorbed in the administrative setup, whereas IPS are personnel that take up the challenging responsibility of maintaining law and order in the society.IAS hold posts like Cabinet Secretary, Under Secretary, Joint Secretary, Additional Secretary, whereas IPS officers clearly belong to the police force and hold posts like Superintendent of Police, Deputy Inspector General and Inspector General. These officers can be posted in different wings of police department such as CBI, CID etc.
Whether it is IAS (Indian Administrative Service) or IPS(Indian Police Services) a candidate has to give the Civil Services Exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC),and the exam is classified into three parts- the preliminary exam, the main exam and the interview. Now its upto you which one you will choose we cannot recommend as you have not mention anything about your educational performance.
