Dear Friend First of all I would like to discuss about the power factor : Power factor of an AC electrical power system is defined as the ratio of the real power delivered to the load to apparent power of the circuit. Here is the power triangle which will clear the difference between active and reactive power. Now Active power performs the work and it is real power whose unit is watt and reactive power is needed in alternating current transmission system to support transfer of real power over the circuit. In simple words the portion of power that is stored in the form of electric and magnetic field due to inductive and capacitive network elements and then returned to the source is called reactive power. Reactive power does not do any work .Its unit is VAr. Dear friend the Difference between Active power and reactive power is :- Active power is the real component of apparent power, due to the component of the current that is in phase (or anti-phase) with the voltage. Reactive power is the imaginary component of apparent power, due to the component of the current that is in quadrature with the voltage. Best of luck....... |

Re: Difference between Active power and reactive power? Electric power consists of two components, active and reactive power. Only active power is produced when there are purely resistive loads which produce current that is in phase with the voltage (unity power factor). Reactive power consumption results in lagging power factor and can cause increased losses and excessive voltage sags. Only active power do actual work while reactive power flows in and out in a cyclic manner to provide energy fields of various loads. Reactive power, which is measured in volt-amperes reactive (vars), is produced when electrical current is out of phase with the electrical voltage due to inductive or capacities loads. Thanks.. |
