Re: Is there any need of GATE qualification to get a job in Public sector?

Yes, now days GATE qualification is mandatory to find a PSU job. PSU like IOCL, NTPC, and OIL are recruiting candidates on the basis of GATE score. A specific percentage of marks in the qualifying exam are mandatory to apply. Candidates need to have a minimum of 60-70% marks. Applicants short listed on the basis of GATE score are subjected for personnel interview, for confirming their selection.

The government-owned corporations are termed as Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in India. In a PSU majority (51% or more) of the paid up share capital is held by central government or by any state government or partly by the central governments and partly by one or more state governments.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) audits government companies. In respect of government companies, CAG has the power to appoint the Auditor and to direct the manner in which the Auditor shall audit the company's accounts.

Eligibility

1. Candidate should be Indian.

2. B.Tech degree from a recognized university.

3. At least 60 percent marks.

4. There should be no pending backlogs.

5. Age limit is 21 to 30 years.

6. The age limit for OBC is 21 to 33 years.

7. Age limit for SC/ST is 21 to 35 years.

The Public Sector Undertakings conducts entrance exam to hire B.Tech candidates. The exam pattern is:

1) Written Test

2) Interview

Now some PSU companies like BHEL, have scrapped the written test and replaced it with GATE entrance exam. Therefore to get job you will have to show valid GATE score which should not be more than 2 years old. Then only these companies would consider you for the job.

Public Sector Undertakings are the companies in which government hold most of the shares. There are well over 150 Public Sector Undertakings in the country. These PSUs recruits B.Tech graduates in various streams for jobs.

PSUs jobs are well desired in the country. Not only the pay is good in these companies but there is also a job security which you can't find in private firms.

At the same time several companies have retained the written test but still consider candidate with good GATE score. If you have scored well in GATE then companies may call you for direct admission and you will not have to appear for written test.

Therefore it is highly recommended that you appear for the GATE entrance exam. Even in the private sector several companies ask for the GATE score of the candidate. This is why I would suggest you to appear for the GATE exam. Please remember that GATE score is only valid for 2 years after which you will have to reappear for the exam.
