Is it compulsory to appear for Subject Test? Will it affect if subject test is taken or not?

Hi,
I am having a confusion regarding the GRE tests provided by the ETS.
One is GRE(General Record Examination) AND another is GRE Subject Test
for specific subject field.
So is it compulsory to appear in this subject test?
Does it affect whether Subject test is taken or Not taken?
Please help me out!!!
Thank You!
