Re: When is the Maths Olympiad exam?

Hello,

Mathematics Olympiad activity on a national level has been one of the NBHM's major initiatives since 1986.

International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) consists of the following stages ==>

[[Stage 1]]

Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO)-->

+++Date+++

KRMO is normally held in the month of November on a Sunday .

It is a 3- hour written test containing about 6 to 7 problems.

On the basis of the performance in the KRMO, a certain number of students are selected to Appear for the INMO written test, normally held on the first Sunday of February in the following year.

Regional coordinators charge a nominal fee to meet the expenses for organizing the contest.

Students studying in I/II P.U.C with Mathematics as one of the subjects of study are eligible to take part in this contest .

[[Venue]]

The KRMO will; be conducted in different centers simultaneously. A candidate can choose anyone of these centers For appearing in the examination. However, if the number of candidates opting for a particular center is too small, the examination will not held at that particular Center & the candidates will be asked to change to a neighboring Center.

++Registration++

Should register his / her name by Paying a nominal registration fee. This fee is non-refundable and not transferable.All registration for the KRMOP have to be made through the Head of the institution in which the candidates are studying .Direct application by candidates are not accepted by the Regional Co-coordinator.

[[Stage 2]]

Indian National Mathematics Olympiad(INMO): INMO is held on the first Sunday of February each year at various centers in different regions .Only students selected on the basis of RMO from different regions are eligible to appear for INMO .INMO is a 4 – hour written test ; the question paper is set centrally and is common throughout the country .The top 30-35 performers in INMO receives a certificate of merit .

[[Stage 3]]

International Mathematics Olympiad Training Camp(IMOTC)-->

The UNMO certificate awards are invited to a month long Training Camp in May/June each year. In addition, INMO awards of the previous year who have satisfactorily gone through postal tuition throughout the year are invited again to a second round of training .

On the basis of a number of selection tests through the Camp, a team of the best six students is selected from the combined pool of junior and senior batch participants to represent India in the international Mathematic Olympaid

3rd stage is on APRIL , from 2nd stage shortlisted ones

The Mathematics Olympiad activity was undertaken by NBHM from 1986 onward's and is currently run in collaborate with the HOMI BHABHA center for science education, Mumbai.
One main purpose of this activity is to support the Mathematical talent in the high school students in the country. NBHM has taken on the responsibility for selecting and training the indian team for participating the Mathimatical Olympiad in every year.

students of the Indian team has received the gold ,silver coins and also the cash price of rs 5,000 - 4,000 - 3,000 - respectively from NBHM during the folling years.

Re: When is the Maths Olympiad exam?

What is a Mathematical Olympiad?

A Mathematical Olympiad is a problem solving competition open to all "mathletes". The aim of the competition is to test innate problem solving skills. The problems are restricted to those that require minimal background and high ingenuity. Since one of the goals of such olympiads is to identify talent at a young age, these olympiads are usually restricted to students not yet admitted to any undergraduate programme.
International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents. IMO 2012 was held in Mar del Plata, Argentina. IMO 2013 was held in Santa Marta, Colombia.
India has been participating in the IMO since 1989 and hosted it in Mumbai in 1996. The 6-member Indian team for the IMO is selected through a three-step procedure, organised by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) and funded by the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.

In IMO 2013, the following members of Indian Team won medals: Sagnik Saha (Silver), Shubham Sinha (Silver), Pranav Nuti (Bronze), Anish Prasad Sevekari (Bronze), Pallav Goyal (Bronze).

Who can appear for this test?

The RMO is meant primarily for students of Class IX--XII. As special cases, exceptionally talented students from Class VIII may be allowed to appear at the discretion of the Regional Coordinator.

Please note that the RMO is the first step in selecting the Indian team for the IMO! This requires special talent in problem-solving and interest in Mathematics. It is not meant for the average or even good student who does not have this.

Where and when does the test take place?

The Regional Mathematical Olympiad for West Bengal is usually held on the first Sunday of December at the various test centres.
Current centres: Balurghat, Bankura, Berhampore, Burdwan, Contai, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Kharagpur, Kolkata, Mohanpur, Narendrapur, Purulia, Raiganj, Santiniketan and Siliguri.
A student may choose any centre convenient to him/her
.
What is the structure of the test?

The RMO will consist of two tests, the first of duration 2 hours and the second of 3 hours. The first test will be based on multiple-choice questions (MCQ), and in the second about 6 to 7 problems will be asked which the applicants will have to solve. We shall grade all the answer-scripts of the first MCQ-based test and based on the performance of the participants in it (i.e., the first test), we shall select an appropriate number of participants whose answer-scripts of the second test will be graded.

How many are selected?

At present, each region selects 30-35 students for the INMO. At most 6 students are selected from Class XII.

Syllabus for Mathematical Olympiads:-

There is no prescribed syllabus for mathematical olympiads. Broadly speaking, students appearing at RMO must be well versed with all the mathematics taught upto Class X level. The major areas from which problems are chosen are Number Theory, Geometry, Algebra and Combinatorics. This includes Arithmetic of Integers, Geometry, Quadratic equations and expressions, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, Systems of linear equations, Permutations and Combinations, Factorization of polynomials, Inequalities, Elementary Combinatorics, Probability Theory and Number Theory, Finite series and Complex numbers, and Elementary Graph Theory. The syllabus does not include Calculus and Statistics.
The problems under each topic are of exceptionally high level in difficulty and sophistication. The difficulty level increases from RMO to INMO to IMO. The book ''An Excursion In Mathematics'' gives a fairly good idea of the background needed to solve these problems. The students should also try the old exams of RMO and INMO. All the problems can be solved without using Calculus or calculators. However these problems are not routine text book problems. They are considerably harder, calling for ingenuity on the part of the solver. Therefore, it is highly advisable that a student solves as many new problems as possible with no or with minimum help. Indeed, if you are unable to solve at least one problem from each old RMO exam without help, RMO is not for you.

An one-week training session is organised at ISI, Kolkata in the last week of December for the selected INMO candidates from West Bengal.
