Re: Maximum age limit for IAS exam? How many times can a candidate appear for IAS exam?

The maximum age for IAS examination will depend upon the category to which you belong.

For a General Category candidate the age limit for IAS exam is 21 to 30 years. There is age relaxation for other reserved category candidates.

5 years age relaxation for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC category candidates is available. So just see to which category you belong and then you can make out your maximum age according to it.

There is relaxation in in terms of number of attempts also that means if you are from a reserved category then you will get extra attempts compared to General category.

For General there is 4 attempts, OBC 7 attempts and for SC/ST there is no limit in attempts for IAS exam.

For IAS exam educational qualification that is required is Graduation in any stream from a recognized University. So make sure that you have this qualification.

Selection is purely on merit and it will be based on the marks in the following stages.

-Preliminary Exam

-Mains Exam

-Personality Test

So be prepared for the exam if you find yourself eligible for it.

The selection for Indian Administrative Service is done through Civil Services Examination. It is one of the world's most competitive and tough exam to crack which would require a lot of hard work.

As far as age limit and number of attempts are concerned, it depends of whether you belongs to General, OBC or SC/ST category. This I have mentioned in details a little below. You should check it out later, first read how to prepare for the exam.

There is a lot of focus on current events in the Civil Services Examination. Therefore what you can do is start reading newspapers and political maganizes. You should also check out international news as well.

Ensure that your English skills are good. Both in writing and speaking. Even if you decides to conduct the exam in Hindi, there still will be one exam of English subject. You must be able to clear it.

You can join some good English speaking classes and improve your command over the language. Else find the best person in your family/friends with good English and take the help to improve your language.

Read the Editorial pieces in newspapers like Indian Express and The Hindu. Mark the words that you don't understand and then later check out the meaning in dictitonary.

You should also select the 2 optional subjects as well. The sooner you decide on this, the better it is. You can start to study these subjects. It is advised to take subjects related to your course or the ones you find easy. A lot of subjects take subjects like History or Geography for the exam.

You should also get the NCERT books for 12th standard to help you study. Apart from this download the previous year's question papers from internet and solve them after few days of study. Find out which are the strong areas for you while which are the weaker ones. You can also give mock tests online.

IAS Eligibility

1. At least graduation should be completed to apply.

2. There is no criteria for marks.

3. Your age should be 21 to 30 years.

4. Upper age limit is relaxed by 3 years for OBC.

5. While the relaxation is maximum of 5 years for SC and ST.

6. There are no physical criteria.

Selection Process

1. Preliminary Exam

2. Main Exam

3. Interview

Number of Attempts

1. General - 4

2. OBC - 7

2. SC/ST - No limit

Re: Maximum age limit for IAS exam? How many times can a candidate appear for IAS exam?

There is no specific exam as IAS exam, but to become an IAS officer one has to apply, appear and crack Civil Service Exam conducted by UPSC every year.

The maximum age limit for Civil Service Exam is 30 years for General candidate and the minimum age is 21 years.

But for a reserved category candidate the upper age is relaxaed for SC/ST candidate up to 5 years and for OBC it is relaxed up to 3 years.

So for SC/ST the maximum age is 35 years while for OBC it is 33 years.

Apart from this the candidate must be an Indian National having completed Graduation Degree in any stream of education from a recognied University.

A General category candidate can appear Civil Service Exam for Four times in his career while it is for Seven times for OBC candidate and no limit for SC/ST candidate.
