yes you are eligible for IAS.
First there will be prelims in which you don't have to choose any subject.
Its an objective exam and has six subjects.
If you qualify in prelims then you to choose any of the two subjects for the essay type main exam.

Yes Being an ECE student you can take history as a part of your examination subject, but I would like to advice you to take Sociology as your optional subject because it's very easy to score marks in this subject.

NCERT's book on Sociology is the best, the below link will help you out.

Re: I am a student of ECE : Am I eligible for IAS with optional subject as History?

you can choose any subject from the list of upsc pattern subjects. first you have to clear the prelimnary examination.since the pattern is changed, you should concentrate on general studies and csat examination. you have chosen history as your optional , if you have interest in history, you can choose that, it is well and good.all the best.

Re: I am a student of ECE : Am I eligible for IAS with optional subject as History?

Yes you're eligible for CSE(Civil Services Examination.)

Selection of optionals doesn't have any regulations ,except one..

i.e. if you're from engineering background,
you should not opt more than one engineering subject which are listed

except this, every other subject can be selected as your optional.

for example

if you are a engineering student, no way related to accounts.. but also with your interest you can select accounting as your optional.

any student apart from his educational background can select any other subject that is listed to select even though he is not of same back ground.

as you asked about selection of optionals

here is one more thing for you

you need to clear CSAT to opt a subject

till then you will have common syllabus with all the other applicants.
.

so all the best for clearing your stage 1 exam..

long way to go...

Re: I am a student of ECE : Am I eligible for IAS with optional subject as History?

To be eligible for the IAS, you need to fulfill certain eligibility criteria such as:

1.Age:

Minimum 21 years of age as on 1st August 20XX(Year of exam).

Upper age limit is 30 years(Relaxations according to govt. Rules)

2.Educational Qualification:

A Graduation degree in any field from a recognized university.Final students of teh degree course may also apply for the exam.

3.Maximum Attempts:

*General:4
*OBC:7
*SC/ST:No Limit

So, if you fulfill the above criteria, then you can apply.

The various optional subjects offered in the exam are as follows:

Agriculture
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
Anthropology
Botany
Chemistry
Civil Engineering
Commerce and Accountancy
Economics
Electrical Engineering
Geography
Geology
History
Law
Management
Mathematics
Mechanical Engineering
Medical Science
Philosophy
Physics
Political Science and International
Relations
Psychology
Public Administration
Sociology
Statistics
Zoology

So you can appear with history as your optional subject.
But being an ECE student, I would suggest you choose mathematics or statistics as your optional subject as these 2 are very much part of your curriculum as far as im concerned. But decision is totally yours.
