For the NET exam you need to select the subject based on your specialisation in the masters level. You will not be permitted to select any other area. If you have pursued a dual specialisation then you can select any of the areas. You need to select the area where you plan to pursue a career. You can visit the UGC site to know the syllabus for each of the areas.
