Will TOEFL scores qualify me for a good university for MS in US in spite of slightly lesser scores in GRE? Or GRE scores matter the most of all??

Dear Aspirant,

GRE and TOEFL exams are written for the placement of admissions in the foreign universities.

So if you get good marks you can get good colleges. Because each college has its own criteria for intake of students.

For that you need to prepare well if you are not confident to crack the exam. Better take the crash course or regular course for these exams so that it will be easy for you.

GRE - Graduate Record Exam

TOEFL - Test Of English as a Foreign Language

So some countries dont prefer GRE but the TOEFL is must for some colleges.

If the college wants IELTS score then you need to write that exam also.

Depending on these score only you can get a seat in a college.

Main Difference between this two is Toefl will test your speaking skills and Gre will test your Vocabulary and english grammers and etc.

So prepare well.

Hope this info helps you.

All the best for your future endeavor's
.

Re: Difference between GRE and TOEFL? Which test is easier to take?

TOEFL is English language test which checks your english language skills and helps you in getting admission in colleges in countries like US.
On the other hand GRE(Graduate Record Exam) checks your quantitative, verbal, technical, aptitude skills for further admission in courses in abroad.

Re: Difference between GRE and TOEFL? Which test is easier to take?

TOEFL is the test for English as a foreign language, to measure English competency for non-native speakers. Many US universities do require this test to be certain that students from other countries have the language skills that they need to survive in a graduate program (or they may require some additional specific language coursework once you arrive.) http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menui…

GRE is the Graduate Record Examinations. They measure specific subject knowledge as well as things like reasoning and analytical skills. Most US universities require a certain minimum performance on the GRE for admission. You'll have to contact the schools where you wish to apply to see what is necessary. http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menui…

The biggest difference between GRE and TOEFL lies in the purpose and importance of the two tests. To best illustrate the difference, let us take you along the steps of applying. Let us consider a student who has scores 73 in TOEFL and 550 and 790 in GRE verbal and quantitative sections respectively. This student is applying to Princeton University. As per Princeton website, the minimum required TOEFL iBT score is 71. The average GRE scores of successful student in recent years for Engineering programs id 580 verbal and 785 quant. TOEFL is a qualifying exam. All applicants at Princeton who scored 70 or below in TOEFL shall be rejected, without looking at the other aspect of their application. Since the student scored more than 70, his application will pass the TOEFL screening. Now the application will be considered by the admission committee. Whether she scored 73 or 119 does not matter at all. Now as you can see her verbal score is below average of the successful applicants and quant score is little above average. At this stage the GRE score will be considered along with all other factors like academic grades, research, letters of recommendation and the SOP. If one or more of these aspects are very impressive she will get admitted even if the verbal score is a bit low.

Now let us consider the same student applying to Purdue University. The minimum required TOEFL iBT score is 77. The average GRE scores of successful student in recent years for Engineering programs at Purdue is 510 verbal and 740 quant. Please note that the TOEFL requirement is higher than her score, whereas the GRE expectations are significantly below her score. At the TOEFL screening level, all applicants who scored below 77 shall be rejected. So her application will never reach the department for consideration, no matter how strong other credentials might be.

Another key difference is in the amount of study needed. Although this is very subjective, an average student who is not a native speaker of English can easily devote six months pf studies for GRE Verbal alone, assuming one hour of effort per day. Same student would need approximately one month of preparation for the TOEFL.

Many students ask how much should I aim for. Our answer is you should score as much as possible. However to put a number, a score of 600 out of 800 is considered a good score. A TOEFL score of 105 out of 200 can be considered more than sufficient to get you in any University, as the required TOEFL score is between 75 and 100 for most top universities.

Best of luck to you in your academic pursuits.

Re: Difference between GRE and TOEFL? Which test is easier to take?

see friend though both exams are for candidates who want to complete their higher studies from abroad the toefl is an exam that checks a candidates proficiency in english and not grad. subject whereas gre exam tests a candidate's english as well as his knowledge in grad. subjects

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GRE ( Graduate Record Exam ) & TOEFL ( Test Of English as a Foreign Language )

The main difference between GRE and TOEFL is that GRE test is to weigh all your skills together that is aptitude, English, technical which is mainly used for getting admission in most of the outer countries like U.S, U.K and Canadian countries.. whereas TOEFL is

only to check English language skill which will be asked specifically by some colleges in foreign countries...

-> So it is based on which score the college needs for joining either GRE and TOEFL together or any one is enough but GRE is the important exam which is covered by most of the universities for admission when compared with TOEFL..

-> GRE and TOEFL both conducted by ETS ( Education Testing Service )

-> When compared with GRE and TOEFL.. GRE is tougher than TOEFL because it needs lot of time for preparation...

-> The GRE test is going to be revised from august 2011 to know more about GRE visit http://www.ets.org/gre/

-> To know more about TOEFL visit http://www.ets.org/toefl/

-> Attached some of the previous year model papers of GRE and TOEFL in this post.. just go through the papers to know about the exam pattern and difficulty..

GRE and TOEFL Both test are different.

TOEFL means Test of English as a Foreign Language and TOEFL test is conducted to determine whether or not you can speak adequate English and it is a test of minimum understanding of English and measures writing, speaking and listening abilities. For iBT(Internet Based TOEFL), score of around 130 will be enough for admission in most of the Universities in USA.

GRE Stands for Graduate Record Examinations and GRE Test is a test of intellectual preparation and consists of four sections verbal, quantitative and analytical writing ability. It is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in the United States.

GRE test is consists of 4 sections and the entire test procedure takes about 4hours. In this test there is no miminum scored was set, if you have scored above 550 for verbal and 700 for Quantitative then your scoe card was acceptable to get admission in graduate schools in the United States.

So, from both the test TOEFL is the easirer test and GRE is tough one.

Re: Difference between GRE and TOEFL? Which test is easier to take?

hi
The TOEFL iBT test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well you combine your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks.
It has two types
1) ibt -internet based test
2) pbt- paper based test

Most of company ,institution are accept this score..........

GRE (General test)
This August, the GRE® revised General Test will replace the current GRE General Test, giving you the advantage of a better test experience — and new types of questions that help show your readiness for graduate-level work.

I collect this information in net.................
