Optometrist and Optician are two related but diverse professions related to eye care and vision. Those who are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of the visual system and associated structures in eye care are referred to as Optometrist. They usually treat eye disorders such as glaucoma, cataract, nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia, etc. They carry out sophisticated tests to measure the extent of vision either in dark or in day light. They also deal with the design of optical accessories such as contract lenses, optic glasses, and so on. Opticians on the other hand deals with adjusting and fitting of optical products (glasses, lenses). Though there are certain similarities between Optometrist and Optician, there also exist certain possible differences between the two.

Optometrist and Opportunities

Graduation in Optometry is the basic qualification requirement for one to obtain the job of Optometrist. The duration of the course study is 4 years. Post graduate courses in optometry are offered through several educational institutions in the country. Those who complete the course can find opportunities with hospitals and in other eye care centers. They can also build up a bright career in teaching or can do well as freelancers.

Optician and Opportunities

The candidate should possess education in the area of optics to get in to the profession of Optician. There exist bachelor degrees as well as short term courses in optics. Candidates who gain experience through formal apprenticeship or on the job are also considered for the position. Some states require Opticians to be licensed where as other require adequate education and experience to get in to the job.

Key differences between Optometrist and Optician

• Optometrist is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting eye care and vision where as Optician is responsible for the adjustment and fitting of optical products.
• The candidate should possess educational qualification in the area of Optometry to get in to the role of Optometrist where as they must possess adequate qualification in Opticianry to become an optician.
• Optometrist are usually employed in hospitals and in eye care clinics where as Opticians are usually recruited in centers offering optical accessories.

The profession of Optometrist is much more responsible and complex when compared to that of Optician.
