How many attempts are allowed for IIT JEE examination?

How many chances will be given to me to write IIT JEE entrance examination if I had passed 10th in 2019 but, will pass 12th in 2024 as I want to take a gap for few years? Generally, how many attempts are allowed in a life time to write IIT JEE?

The acronym JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination. It is now conducted by National Testing Agency.

JEE has two stages JEE Main and JEE Advanced. There are three attempts for candidates in JEE Main and two consecutive attempts in JEE Advanced.

If you appear for 12th in 2024 then you can write JEE main in 2024, 2025 and 2026 and advanced in 2024 and 2025 only as per current norms.

You can take part in IIT JEE exam after 2 years of your 10th class passing and if you can't get selected then you can take one more chance just after that.
but see if you passed 10th class admit in 11th class then you repeat it 2-3 times then JEE will not allow you to sit in the exams.
Attempts should be just two and three years after 10th.

IIT JEE stands for Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination. JEE is conducted by National Testing Agency. JEE has two stages:

JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The admission in IITs is given to candidates who secure good rank in JEE Advanced. On JEE Main rank, admission in NITs, IIITs and other government engineering colleges is given.

There are three consecutive attempts for JEE Main and two consecutive attempts for JEE Advanced, one including in year in which you appear for 12th board examinations.

IIT JEE examination board allows six attempts to each student. Gaping year does not matter for IIT JEE examination. Suppose a candidates have gap years but he/she have not taken part in IIT JEE examination never. In that case gaping years will not be considered as attempts.

The first thing I would like to let you know is that AIEEE and IIT JEE has been replaced by JEE since 2014.

JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination and is held by NTA in two stages namely JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced.

Further, the maximum number of attempts allowed in JEE Main is 3 while the same in case of JEE Advanced is just two. Also, these attempts must be successive including the attempt made in Class 12th qualifying year.

So, if you complete your Class 12th in 2024, you can appear in JEE Main held in 2024, 2025, and 2026 while you can appear in JEE Advanced 2024, and JEE Advanced 2025 provided you satisfy the eligibility criteria required for appearing in these examinations.

The full form of IIT JEE is Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination.

There are three consecutive attempts for JEE Main examination and two attempts for JEE Advanced examination.

Admission to IIT is done on basis of JEE Advanced rank. The first attempted is counted in board appearing year.

  • Number of attempts for JEE Advanced Exam: 2 (consecutive)
  • Number of attempts for JEE Main Exam: 6 (consecutive)

Note that JEE Main exam is now conducted twice in a year. So, its number of attempts have been revised.

As per the current rules, you can write JEE mains upto 2 years after you pass 12th grade(which means you get 3 attempts which are in 2024,2025,2026) and JEE advanced upto 1 year after you pass 12th grade(which means you get 2 attempts which are in 2024 and 2025).
