What is the main function of the constitution?

Constitution plays a vital role in governance of any country. The Constitution of any country consists of provision, rules, ideals necessary for ruling any country. The main function is to give the country which a state needs to follow in governance to achieve objectives mentioned in constitution.

For example, Indian Constitution has one of the lengthy constitution of India with Preamble of constitution defining that India will be a sovereign socialist, secular, democratic republic. There are provisions mentioned in different Articles.
