Astronaut is considered a tough job to get, by many career counselors. Due to its rigorous selection procedure, knowledge and fitness it expects from candidates. But it is not an impossible task to become astronaut.

From India we have successful astronauts who traveled in space such as Rakesh Sharma, Kalpana Chawla, Sunitha Williams and Ravish Malhotra. If you study about them you will get the clues on how to enter this exciting field.

However I will try to give my insights and understandings about Astronaut based on my research interest. Lets discuss question by question:-

You need to study science group. Preferably Aeronautical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Electronics Engineering or Robotics Engineering etc., You can also study any degree related to science, but it is preferable to opt engineering if you have choice. Try to do Bachelors in best of the best institute in our country. Like IITs.

That doesn't actually matter, astronauts are recruited from around the world based on different channels. As you are already Indian. No need to fret for that. You have a good chance of becoming Astronaut.

There may or may not be exam for Astronaut based on where you apply and how your candidature goes to the selection panel. Mainly astronauts are selected through two channels one is from Military and other is from Civilians. For example take Rakesh Sharma, our first Indian to travel space. He joined Indian Air Force and after serving for several years in IAF he got selected for ISRO and European Space Agencies combined mission. And if we look at another example Ms. Kalpana Chawla who is the first Indian Origin Woman to travel space was a B.E (Aeronautical Engineering) later Did her Masters in Aerospace (In America) and did her Ph.D in Aerospace engineering. Later applied for job in NASA and developed interest to become astronaut and applied for NASA Astronaut Corps. After that got a chance for first flight.

This did not happen for Ms. Chawla sooner. She had to wait and update her knowledge with passion exhibit her talent in whichever possible task she gets. In this way people get successful to become Astronaut.

As you have burning desire to become Astronaut your first step towards your goal is to get seat in B.Tech (Aeronautical Engineering) from a top and reputed college in India or Abroad. Work in this direction initially your path will unfold itself.

Hope all your important questions were answered.

For being an Astronaut, you must take your subject as PCM.
Then you must do your engineering with computer Science Branch.
Then apply for ISRO .
And then work as an Astronaut.

First of all, make it very clear that being an astronaut is a very very great dream but it is surely not a cake walk.

For being an astrnaut you should get training at NASA and ISRO.

Since you are an India, then you can get admitted in ISRO.

There is an entrance exam on the graduation basis conducted by ISRO every year for engineers.

Since you are in 10th standard right now, you should concentrate on your studies, and most importantly on Mathematics and Physics.

Choose a science background with Maths + Physics as the main subjects in the 11th standard, pass 12th with a good grade and get admitted into a good Enginnering college with a branch of Aeronautical Engineering, if possible.

Pass the Engineering, appear in the entrance exam, crack it, and get admitted into ISRO.

I first cleared that its not at all a cake walk.

With mental soundness, you need to be physically sound too.
