Candidates securing at least 55% marks in their Master's Degree or equivalent from a recognized university in Humanities (including languages), Social Science, Computer Science and Applications, Electronic Science, etc. are eligible to appear for the UGC NET exam conducted by NTA.
The candidate should have completed a masters' degree from any university to get admission.

For PhD in English Literature ,you must have a post graduate degree in English or in any related field .
Duration of this course is 2 to 5 years.

And also you have to qualify the entrance exam called GATE, UGC NET and JNUEE.

NET JRF score is used by the candidate to get admitted into MPhil/PhD degree courses to undertake research activities.
Only after getting registered in any recognised institute for M.phil/PhD, the candidates receive financial assistance under JRF scheme .
So to be eligible for exam , the aspiring applicants need to fulfill certain eligiblity conditions .

The applicant must have completed masters degree with atleast 55% marks.

The candidates belonging to reserved categories like SC, ST, OBC and Pwd are eligible for 5% relaxation in marks.

The candidates having research experience are also eligible for maximum 5 yrs if age relaxation.
