dear friend,
for cracking iit jee exam, not only hard work is required but strategy is also required for preparation. you must first study from ncert books to clear your concept. after that i will suggest you to study from
tata mcgraw hills for maths
d c pandey for physics
arihant for chemistry
you must also for once try to solve all the previous years question papers to get the knowledge of pattern and difficulty level of the exam.
while solving the sample papers, never see the solution directly. first try to solve the questions by yourself two to three times. if then also you fail, then see the solution.
you must remember these tips to get good result.
good luck.

for physics:-
1.All the series of Interactice Physics-these are the best books for grasping any concept in physics....and no one can deny it....but for problems you should refer to other books
2.D.C Pandey

for chemistry:-
1.R.C.Mukherjee or Essential Physical Chemistry by Ranjeeth Shahi
2.Arihant publications for inorganic chemistry
3.Jagadamba singh for oraganic chemistry- this is by far the best for grasping the basics of organic chemistry...and thats what you need to make the subject totally yours

for mathematics:-
1.Arihant publications-all books
2.Arihant AIEEE for developing speed and confidence and basics
3.Arihant New Pattern or M.L.Khanna for advanced level problems(completely finish of only ONE of these books)

and use Resonance Ready Reckoner for the best revision as it is a compedium of all formulae and concepts, read it everyday to know all relevent concepts and formulae inside out.

and for study material of an institute choose either FIITJEE or Resonance for a correspondence course

I myself qualified JEE-2010 and JEE-2011 with good rank and got AIR 2160 in AIEEE-2011.
From my experience I can tell that the NCERT books in all the subjects are mandatory to read.
Apart from that
Physics:HC Verma
Chemistry:NCERT
Maths:TMH

The best way to prepare for JEE both Main & Advanced is to begin just after the 12th exams beginning with basics and as you move on solving questions from practice books and then taking timed mock tests. I have found really good series of JEE books for main & advanced by Wiley Maestro and they have useful resources on their website as well.
