Gulbarga University was formed by an Act of the State of Karnataka in the year 1980. The jurisdiction of the university is spread over five districts of Karnataka namely Koppal, Bellary, Raichur, Bidar and Gulbarga. A post-graduate centre of Karnatak University was converted into Gulbarga University and its main campus is spread over an area of 860 acres of land, which is six km away from the city of Gulburga.

Five post-graduate centers are functioning under the university each at Bidar, Raichur, Bellary, Krishnadevaraya Nagar and Basavakalyan respectively. More than 35 post-graduate departments are functioning under the university through which different Ph. D, M. Phil and post-graduate degree courses are offered by the university. The vision of Gulburga University is to attain sustainable development, empowerment through knowledge and excellence in higher education. The university is offering courses through six of its faculties namely commerce & management, education, law, social sciences, arts and science & technology.

The main campus of the university includes several facilities like student housing, sports, SC/ST cell, prasaranga, national service scheme, library, health centre, guest house, computer centre and science instrumentation centre. The university has employed more than 200 teaching staff and around 1000 non-technical and technical staff members. The university aims at equipping students with creativity, competence and knowledge to face the challenges at the international level and to facilitate finest usage of natural and human resources so as to attain sustainable growth.
