Kamaun University was formed in the year 1973 under the Act of Uttarpradesh State Government. The headquarters of the university is situated at Naintal and it has another campus at Almora. In addition to the two campuses, another new campus is also developed by the University at Bhimtal for catering the requirements of vocational, technical and professional education.

The mission of the University is to attain all round development and to provide high quality research and excellent education. The university is offering education under different faculties like engineering & technology, science, law, education, commerce and arts. Different conventional courses, tourism, pharmacy and biotechnology courses are offered by the university.
