In the year 1979, a group of seven committed people with the same concern to the cause of education and community development, under the guidance and leadership of Justice K.S. Hegde conceived the idea of introducing a trust with the objective of providing basic education, training manpower and to offer health care and this paved the way for the establishment of NITTE Educational Trust in the year 1979. Over the past three decades of concerted dedication and efforts, the NITTE Educational Trust has been recognized as one of the finest educational organization in the state. This trust is running the NITTE University and in recognition of the trust’s excellence in service and education to the community, the Ministry of Human Resource Development conferred the status of Deemed-to-be-university through a notification dated 4th of June 2008.

Nitte University offers education under the faculties of physiotherapy, pharmacy, nursing, dental and medicine through its constituent colleges offering courses under these faculties. Admission of students to any course offered by the NITTE University is done through an Entrance Test conducted by the university on its own fulfilling the requirements of the University Grants Commission and Statutory Bodies like AICTE, PCI, DCI and MCI. The Entrance test for UG and PG admissions are called as NUUGET and NUPGET respectively. On the basis of the marks secured by the candidates in entrance test for each course a merit list will be prepared and counseling of candidates will be done according to the merit list for the seats available with the university. There will be second counseling if there are vacancies after first counseling with due notification.
