The Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University came into existence through an Act of the Tamil Nadu Government in the year 2004 and the university holds the pride of being the first university of its kind meant exclusively for sports and physical education. The university also acts as an affiliating university and the act through which the university was established came into force from the 15th September of the year 2005 after obtaining permission from the President of the nation on the 5th of August 2005. The best co-incidence with the year of the establishment of this university is that the year was declared as International years of sports and physical education by the United Nations.
