Central Institute of Psychiatry was established in the year 1918 under Government of India. The institute is situated in Ranchi, Jhanrkhand. Dr. S. Haque Nizamie is the dean of the university. Initially the institute was established as a hospital with the name Ranchi European Lunatic Asylum to catered to the needs of the European mental patients only. The institute established the Indian Psychiatric Society in the year 1948. The institute was made affiliated to the University of London for the Diploma in Psychological Medicine examination in the year 1922.
