PEC University of Technology was previously called as Punjab Engineering College and actually, the college began its journey with its names of Mugalpura Engineering College at Lahore in the year 1921. Later, the name of the institution was changed as Maclagan Engineering College and its began its functioning in this name in the year 1924. Later in the year 1931, the college got affiliation from the Punjab University and after partition in the year 1947, the college was shifted to Roorkee and was given a new name as East Punjab College of Engineering. Again, in the year 1950, the term ‘east’ in the name of the college was dropped and it was named as Punjab Engineering College. In the year 1953, the college was shifted to its present campus in the city of Chandigarh and it came under the control of Government of Punjab. In the year 1966, when the Union Territory of Chandigarh was formed, the college came under the control of the Indian Government and in the year 2003, the Government of India notified Punjab Engineering College as a Deemed University with its name as Punjab Engineering College Deemed University. In the year 2009, the board of governors renamed the institution as PEC University of Technology.
