Andrologist – How to become an Andrologist?

Andrology deals with the study of male reproductive and urological system. Andrologists are the doctors who treat various disorders that affect the male reproductive and urological system like cancer, infertility, erectile dysfunction and genital trauma. They will perform various diagnostic tests and imaging on the patients to determine the cause of the concerned disease. They will suggest treatment like medication, hormone therapy or surgery according to the assumption they reached after performing the various tests.

Qualifying Exam

Candidates who want to become andrologists should first obtain MBBS degree from any Institution recognized by Medical Council of India. Then they should obtain either MS in General Surgery or MD in General Medicine. They can also do DNB in General Surgery or General Medicine after MBBS. If they are doing general surgery course then they should obtain MCh degree in Urology, otherwise they should obtain DM in endocrinology. After obtaining any of these degrees, they can practice as an andrologist in any hospital.

Who are eligible to apply?

There are several Institutions in India offering MBBS degree course approved by Medical Council of India. Admission to this course will be given on the basis of the score obtained in an entrance test. Candidates who have passed plus two with the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology are only eligible to apply for this entrance test. After completing four year MBBS course, candidates can apply for the entrance tests conducted for the admission to MS, MD or DNB courses. Candidates can get admission to these courses if they score well in the corresponding entrance test. They can apply for the entrance test conducted for the admission to MCh or DM courses after completing the MS, MD or DNB course.

Andrologists should possess good knowledge about the disorders that affect on male reproductive and urological system. They should be able to keep their patients comfortable as reproductive health is a sensitive issue among the people. They should possess enough self-confidence to make quick decisions in emergency situations.  They should possess good problem solving skills and the ability to withstand the pressure from their work.
