please let me know am i on the right path ,
since a lot of subjects in civil i feel are of my interest ..
is it a good option for me going for IES from civil having btech degree in IT.

IES - Indian Engineering Service

This exam is being carried out by UPSC(Union Public Service Commission) and this exam is conducted for candidates to join in Indian Engineering Organizations who are from the following departments:

• Civil Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• Electronics Engineering

As you are a Civil Engineering student,you are eligible for the exam as regarding the education qualification.

There are certain other criteria's which you need to satisfy and they are:

Eligibility for IES:

Nationality:

> The candidate need to be a citizen of India

Age Limits:

The candidates should also have a age limit of 21-30 years for General category.

The candidates should also have a age limit of 21-35 years for SC/ST category.

The candidates should also have a age limit of 21-33 years for OBC category.


Education Qualification:

> The candidate appearing for the exam must have completed graduation in Engineering/Technology in:

• Civil Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• Electronics Engineering

The candidates who satisfy all these criteria's will be eligible for the IES Exam and the candidates will be selected through:

• Written Test
• Personality Test.

If I understand you correctly, you are having or going to have a BTech degree in IT and you are asking whether you can take Engineering Services Exam of UPSC in Civil Engg.

If my understanding is correct, then the answer is NO. Because, having interest in Civil Engg is different from clearing the exam. The questions in the exam, including in Civil Engg, would be of degree level. I doubt you would be able to answer them satisfactorily when you have not done your degree course in Civil Engg. For your guideance, go the the UPSC website http://www.upsc.gov.in/ and look at the link Previous Years Question Papers and get hold of last few years' question papers. That would clear all your doubt.

Incidentally, why did you take IT, if Civil Engg was your favourite?

IES-INDIAN ENGINEERING SERVICE conducted by UPSC every year for recruitment in technical posts in various Dept. under Central Government and basically recruitment is done from the following branchesof engineering:-

CIVIL ENGINEERING
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
ELECTRONICS AND TELECOMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

The candidate must be an Indian National having either appearing for the final B.Tech. engineering exam or pass in any discipline and preferably from the above mentioned branches from a recognised University within the age of 21 to 30 years of age, is eligible to aply for IES exam. There is upper age relaxation for SC/ST/PH candidate up to 5 years and for OBC candidate up to 3 years.

The selectio is through written test followed by personal interview.

IES is the best option for you so you can go for IES exam.
