Normally in jobs that pay minimum wage the supervisors are usually folks who got good at what they do and worked up the ranks. They might only make a little bit more than the average worker or as much as thousands of dollars more.

If the higher paying jobs, the supervisor or manager might have come from another company or department and not worked up the ranks, they may or may not even know what the techs or other specialist do for their job. However, the supervisor or manager's job is to manage the people and the department. As these specialists and techs can have various salaries, so do the supervisors or managers. However, frequently a senior tech or specialist can make as much or more than the supervisor or manager, if they have specialized training, skills, education or do work that commands high salaries.

So it really comes down to what type of career field are you looking at when you ask how much does a supervisor make.

If you’re applying for a job in a different department, it’s always good to be familiar with the personnel and supervisor there—otherwise, it’s out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Believe me—I sat on many committees at my last job and last marketing manager job—and could not believe the level of trash talking and disrespect that went on about employees from the bottom of the pile to the 3 principals.

If your supervisor is difficult to get along with, and has a shit list of many people, his/her input won’t make much difference, especially if you have proved yourself to be a good worker, and someone another supervisor is anxious to get his/her hands on.

HR is rarely any help—they’re essentially there to follow the law in hiring/firing situations, and to maintain the status quo.

If you haven’t done so already, do you homework and get to meet the people in the department that you wish to work in. When a supervisor knows your work, s/he won’t care what someone who whines in every meeting has to say about you.

But be scrupulous in examining your own work—if you haven’t performed at your best, turned out a lot of work, and developed your expertise so that you’re respected among your peers, bring your game up a few notches. Word will definitely get around.
