Re: Which engineering branch is best?

Most students and parents seem to be very focused on getting in to the “best” branch (Computer Science, Electronics & Telecommunications, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, etc.) Everybody wants to get into the “top” branch. Everybody wants to know which branch has the best “scope” in the future.

This is misguided. There are a number of reasons why the branch doesn’t matter all that much:

If you study in a good college, all branches have “scope”. There are successful businesses and well-paying jobs in all disciplines, including civil engineering, and chemical engineering. And the vast majority of computer science graduates in the country do not have decent jobs (because there are so many of them!) If you study in a bad college, a good branch is not going to help you. Also, so called “good” branches with lots of “scope” tend to be over-crowded, because everyone is entering that field. And finally, nobody really knows which branch will have the most “scope” 10 years from now. (When I did my Engineering, my friends took Computer Science in VJTI because they couldn’t get into more sought after branches like E&TC and Mechanical!)

Changing of field is very common amongst engineers. Just looking at my batchmates, I know metallurgical engineers who are in advertising agencies, mechanical engineers who are into banking and finance, chemical engineers working on Bollywood movies, and computer scientists in the insurance industry doing non-computer stuff. What branch you get your degree in is forgotten within 5 years of graduating.

What branch the student is interested in, is irrelevant. This is a big one. 12th standard students tell me, “I am more interested in Computers. I don’t like Mechanical.” Frankly, in 12th standard, you have no clue what any particular field involves. If for a field, hundreds of colleges in the country are giving engineering degrees in that field, then almost by definition, that field has interesting and cool work going on all over the world. If you find that field boring, then, the most likely explanation is that you’ve been taught that subject by a bad teacher. My guess would be this: any subject that you find very interesting was probably taught to you by a good teacher, and for every boring subject, there’s probably a bad teacher of that subject sometime in your past. A good professor in any branch can make the branch come alive for you.

I am not asking you to ignore the branch entirely. All I’m saying is that give it a little less importance than you are currently giving it.

College does matter

The original IITs, and BITS Pilani, are clearly better than other engineering colleges. Most NITs are better than most state engineering colleges (except the top state colleges). Top state colleges (e.g. COEP, VJTI, PICT) are clearly better than the second-tier engineering colleges. And so on. (Unfortunately, I don’t really know how good or bad the new IITs are. You’ll need to make that judgement on your own.)

It’s fashionable to say the college doesn’t matter. And it is very common to trot out examples of students from terrible colleges who have succeeded in life. But that’s flawed logic. Students who succeed inspite of being in a bad college, are probably succeeding in spite of the college, not because of the college. And probably would have done even better if they had been in a better college.

Better colleges have better systems of education, better professors, and better “resume value” (which, whether you like it or not, is a factor for a long, long time.) Also, in better colleges, you have better classmates. This matters in the short term (because better classmates means more influence of friends who are interested in the right things), and the long term (better “network”).

So, here’s my (controversial) advice: if you are getting a not-so-good branch in a very good college, vs. a good branch in a not-so-good college, you e, you should definitely choose the not-so-good branch in the very good college. I would definitely pick Metallurgical Engineering in IIT-Bombay, over Computer Science in Cummins, Pune. If the colleges are sort-of-comparable, then go for the “better” branch (for whatever definition of “better”). For example, if you have Mechanical Engineering in COEP, and Computer Science in VIT, then go for VIT – because althought COEP is better than VIT, it is not all that much better.

Re: Which engineering branch is best?

While selecting a brand you should first see where your interest lies in because if you have dedication and interest you can Ace up in any branch for that matter.
Second also check last record history packages of that brand in the college in which you are applying.
But as you need some suggestions here are mine:
CS, IT, SE(software) :
job type : mostly Private, Few Govt.
Starting Salary :
min : 3lpa (in companies like Infosys)
Max : around 30–40lpa(in INDIA), this can vary

Re: Which engineering branch is best?

Hi,

See all engineering branches are good. You need to decide which type of work you want to do.If you have passion on to know about computer then you can join CSC,IT,ETC or if you have passion on doing mechanical thing like built a machine which reduce human effort in work then you can join mechanical engineering.

It depends on you.

Re: Which engineering branch is best?

Dear student, the selection of an engineering branch must be according to your interest. You will be able to exel in the subject you are interested in and obviously there will be a lot of opportunities before you .
There are many more branches than you have mentioned above such as metallurgical and materials engineering, production engineering etc. So please understand about these branches and select a branch of your interest. Wishing luck for your future.

Re: Which engineering branch is best?

Hi ,

Mechanical and Civil are evergreen departments and has a good scope in the future.

ECE is the worst dept if u choose your career in IT field else it is a good and hectic department.
EIE is again as same as ECE ....but it has wide scope in the world .... Without automation there is no company prevails ..so EIE engineer will have atleast one job in every company in the world.

CSE and IT are good if you are really interested in Coding, Programming etc.

Chemical Engineerig also have a lot of future in the current world.

Good Luck

Hi,

Firstly, mechanical engineering is one of the best choices. But if you are scared of subjects and if you really want to change your stream then go for Civil. Civil has a tremendous scope in Private and Government sectors....

Re: Which engineering branch is best?

Each and every stream in Engineering course is having it own career scope and job opportunities for the candidates.

Only thing is that the candidate have to make most out of the course by gaining good subject knowledge and communication skills.

Some of the popular streams in Engineering are
Civil Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Electronics and Computer Science Engineering
Information Technology
Computer Science Engineering
Chemical Engineering etc.

Civil and Mechanical Engineering are ever green.

Irrespective of market conditions, the candidates who have completed this course will easily find the job opportunities.

In IT field the boom is not constant.

We have seen what happened when the recession was occured.

People lost their jobs.

However IT is in good boom from the past few years and you will be paid good salaries in this field.

Choose the stream in Engineering as per your interest and complete it successfully.

Wish you all the best.

Hi Friend :

Each and every branch is best here ...
You must select your interest and accordingly select your field ....
Nowadays , Production , Manufacturing , Rubber , Chemical , Textile , Mining , Bio-Medical , Nano Tech, are some depts have very less number of students but have more job offers ....
ECE , EEE , Mech. , Civil , CSE are major branches in Engineering but all they go to Software which is of no use ...

Hello Friend,
Let me clear, every branch is good at their places. But if you are thinking to take admission in MECHANICAL, ETC, CSC and many more you will find that there's more competition than streams like Polymer Engg., Textile, Mining, Agriculture Engg. So I will suggest you to take admission in such branches. In whole India there are only 30-40 colleges of Polymer Engg. so think on it. Dont worry about placement. If you do well you will get the best. Thank you.

Re: Which engineering branch is best?

Now a days six engineering streams have more demand they are:
Mechanical
Electrical
Electronics
Computer science
Civil
Chemical
Among this Mechanical and Civil stream are evergreen, their demand never end in the world. So you can take any one either Mechanical or Civil. My one more suggestion is if you are really interested in other sectors you can that too,if you work hard in those area you will definitely get good chances.

Re: Which engineering branch is best?

DEAR FRIEND

Its just so simple dear........
No one suggest you to take this branch or another branch.......
It is only depend on you and your interest.

1.Computer Science & Engineering
If you want to do something new in computer, if you always experiment with your computer, are you strong enough in mathematics and logic making skills then go for this branch.

2.Electrical & Electronics
Have you ever open your switch board and repair it ,do you want to know the functioning of your home electrical appliances, are u interested in sensors & transistor then go for this.

3.Mechanical & production Engineering

If you are intersted in bike and cars design, if you like to make some new mechanism , if you like to use your engineering skills for a common man life then choose this branch. This branch require a real hard work. This is called evergreen branch ,now a days there are a lot of job opportunity and money in this sector if you have talent and ready to work hard.

4. Civil Engineering
If you are interested in building making, have you ever think how this can be done after seeing a building then this branch is for you.
If you are hardworking and talented then there are a lot of opportunity in this sector.

If you are little interested in IT then go for this branch because now a days this branch gets high placement percentage and you definetly like IT worka.

Dear friend,
Now a days the six core branches like Mechanical, electrical, civil, electronics, chemical,c omputer science have more chances than other.Based on your interest you can take any of the above branches.Among this civil and mechanical, electrical have more chances in private sector.Electronics and computer science have more chances in private sector.
My final suggestion is you can take any of the six branches based on you interest,so that you won't face any problem.

Dear Friend ,

In the Engineering filed many branches now open.

In the engineering filed you have the many options arrived which is the as under :-

1. Mechanical Engineering.

2. Computer Engineering.

3. Genetics Engineering.

4. Production Engineering.

5. Automobile Engineering.

etc..

But i think the Genetics Engineering & Mechanical Engineering is better the other filed Because of these filed requirement is always in the national & Multinational companies.

So, i think these flied is the very brighter in these filed.

with best wishes of Makes 25.

Dear friend,

Its very good thing that you have got 73% in Board Exams, and now you are going to take admission in Engineering College.

But before taking admission, you must first ensure that you are choosing the right engineering branch for yourself.

Before choosing the branch, ask few questions pertaining to the courses like:

For Computer Science & Engineering, you ask yourself these questions.

1.Do you like computer ? (I am not talking about computer games and Internet)
2.Do you want to do something new in computer ?
3.Do you always experiment with your computer and surprise others ?
4 Are you strong enough in mathematics and logic making skills ?
5.Do you like puzzles ?
6.Are you having a good IQ.

If your answers are almost yes, then CS is the best option for you.

Likewise, you can see other Engineering Branches and examine whether you should opt for it or not.

Electrical & Electronics
1. Have you ever open your switch board and repair it ?
2. Do you want to know the functioning of your home electrical appliances ?
3. Do you want to know what is really going on in a computer CPU ?
4. Are u interested in sensors & transistor ?
5. Do you want to make your own robot ?

Mechanical & production Engineering

1.Are you interested in bike and cars design ?
2.Do you take interest in functioning of daily routine things ?
3.Do you ask basic question to your teachers(i.e how this works ? how that works ?)
4.Do you like physics ?
5.Do you like to make some new mechanism ?
6.Do you like to use your engineering skills for a common man life ?

Civil Engineering

1.Are you interested in building making ?
2.Are you ready to rock the world by your talent ?
3.Have you ever think how this can be done after seeing a building ?

CSE and IT are good branch but seeing the current situation I wont tell you to choose them..But there is always a high response for this branch because of the growing rate of the IT industry which demands more and more software engineer..
Mechanical branch which ig going in a smooth manner for some of the years..it is a good branch which gives you the knowledge about the machine.
