Hello friend,
The format of civil service exam has been changed from the current year, i.e.2011 and has made the examination more challenging.
The first stage of the examination, i.e.Civil service aptitude test will comprise of two compulsory papers. To crack the CSAT, you got to have a sufficient knowledge of almost every subject you have studied in the 10th and +2 level.
Now moving on to the main exam, the format of the exam will remain the way it was. The main exam comprise of both compulsory and optional papers.
The compulsory paper includes:
English
One Indian Language
Essay
General Studies

English and one Indian language are of qualifying nature and hence, the score in these two subjects are not taken into consideration while making the merit list, but you need to obtain the minimum marks/pass marks.
There will be two papers of general studies and one paper of Essay.
To do well in the exam, you have to work hard equally in all the papers and ignorance of any particular paper may lead to failure in the exam.

As far as optional papers are concerned, being an engineering graduate, you are not allowed to select both the papers from engineering stream. So, the selection of other optional paper should be based on your interest and knowledge in particular subject apart from engineering.

For details regarding the exam, you may refer to the official website of UPSC.
